About

Ellis “Ellie” Riggsbee

Hello! I'm a first-year (2025–26) philosophy Ph.D. student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I'm from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where I also completed my undergraduate studies at UNC with a double major in Philosophy and Economics.

Beyond coursework and research, I care a lot about the social and public life of philosophy. At Michigan, I help co-organize projects like the COMPASS workshop, Michigan’s High School Ethics Bowl, and an affinity group for women and gender minorities in philosophy. I’m also interested in public philosophy, largely thanks to my time with the Parr Center for Ethics, where I saw how philosophical conversations can be practical, lively, and accessible for all ages and communities.

Outside of philosophy, I tend to have a mix of steady hobbies and rotating enthusiasms. I have a consistent love for all things music, especially singing, vocal and orchestral composition and arrangement, and production (see here). I also enjoy hiking, spending time with friends, playing board and video games (with said friends), baking, arts and crafts, and playing with dogs. Some of my more elusive hobbies include playing racket sports, baking, wood burning, making tea- and juice-based drinks, reading sci-fi and fantasy novels, and lately, retro tech.
